Old Business:

1.) Planning for the fall workshop: we have agreed to schedule a Local History Treasures/ History Project workshop for Friday, October 26, 2018, 9:00am to 12:00pm at the Marina Branch of MCFL. Two main panelists will be invited to present: archives specialist Jennifer Smith and local history librarian Deborah Lipoma, as well as representatives from each of our respective libraries to give a brief (5-10 minute) overview of unique library holdings. We can also incorporate a show-and-tell component which will be presented “science fair style” with time to mill around and share information resources. Alternately, if our two proposed speakers are not available, Beata suggested we could invite other experts such as staff from the Monterey County Historical Society, and Sean suggested a possible presenter from the Asian Cultural Experience (ACE) Speaker’s Bureau. Cynthia has volunteered to make the flyer in August. Beata is reserving the Meeting Room in Marina. Frank has been willing to do online registration for workshop participants as well as putting together the survey and we are hoping he can assist with this.

2) Beginning in August, Stacy and David will serve as Co-chairs for 2018-2019 year.

New business:

1) NPS University Librarian, Eleanor Uhlinger, has retired. NPS will open a nationwide recruitment for this directorship.

2) Salinas Public Library will be participating in “California Listens” a collaborative project between the California State Library and StoryCenter. The project, which will take place in June, has signed up 10 participants. “California Listens” will culminate in a local history presentation/event. Salinas has obtained approval to build a new El Gabilan library. Salinas hosted a 150 years celebration on Founders Day in April. 8,000 people made a timeline wall at Steinbeck which will rotate and change themes.

3) The Cabrillo Library will be bringing the Children’s Peace and Anti-bias Library to the Watsonville ILC. The collection will include 400 children’s books, many in Spanish for Early Childhood Education students and others who bring their kids to this location.

4) MCFL undertook an oral history project called Storycorps two years ago, and still has a kit to do digital storytelling. MCFL currently has 4 openings for Librarians, with vacancies to be filled in Castroville, Marina, Literacy and Outreach. MCFL is gearing up for Summer Reading, and, with support from the California State Library, will be facilitating the “Lunch at the Library” program in Seaside and Greenfield. MCFL hosted a Veterans Poetry Contest in May, and received many entries.

5) SCPL has been busy with many programs and projects, gearing up for Summer Reading programs as well as moving forward with construction with a new branch facilities in Capitola and Felton. They are in the process of hiring a new head of Collection Management Services.

6) Watsonville is celebrating the City’s Sesquicentennial in 2018, and the library marked 10 years in the new Civic Center location this month. WPL has filled a couple of previously vacant positions. Watonka is now the Principal Librarian in charge of Public Services, Alicia Martinez is now the Principal Librarian in charge of Technology and Support Services, and Alejandro Chavez is the new Circulation Manager. WPL has received a Library Innovation Lab grant from California Humanities to support new programs to engage immigrant communities.

7) Hartnell has embarked on the journey to join the growing movement for Guided Pathways, an initiative to improve student success, expedite graduation, and support scholastic achievement. The goal from day one is to embed the library in these programs from the ground up, and for the library to be recognized as integral to the school’s mission from the beginning.

6) MPL has hired a Public Services Coordinator. MPL is also participating in the California Listens program.

Tech Committee:

ILL Committee

SPLAMBA:

Ellie reported that the committee is in high gear with Summer Reading Program rollouts. 3 libraries are participating in the PLP Student Success Initiative to use school enrollment information to process library registration for all kids. The March workshop addressed the topic of diversity in children's literature. It’s important for people to see themselves reflected in literature as well as those different from themselves. The workshop booklist, "Mirrors and windows," is a great resource for parents and teachers.
