Reports

Administrative Council: Hasn’t met since last MOBAC Ref. meeting; nothing to report.

Tech Committee:  Deborah reported that the tech committee discussed ways to turn the MOBAC services survey into a database, but no ideas so far.  They also discussed ways of supporting virtual attendance at meetings and workshops, and the usefulness of recording workshops.

ILL Committee: Hasn’t met since last MOBAC Ref. meeting; nothing to report.

SPLAMBA:  Be reported that the committee wants to encourage school participation, so is considering meeting times. Also are discussing a spring workshop on the topic of social media safety.

Old Business

Reference Committee workshops for PLP update: tabled until Mary Elturk is back.

Reviewing Services Survey on website:  Sub Committee Report (Heather and Jean).  Jean reported feedback to date- requests to add categories for Macs, laminating, 3-D printers, and to clarify meaning of “downloads” and “audio”.  We thought it would be good to separate Wireless and Laptops into two different categories.  Committee suggested also adding meeting rooms available to the public, and for MOBAC purposes, with their technical capabilities, and parking availability, with costs.  Jean will send out email again to gather more responses.

Finalize Annual Report.  The report was modified and approved. Sarah will submit to council in October.

Finalize Reference workshop for October

Update from planning committee (Be, Inga, Laura).  We modified the schedule and finalized speakers.  Be volunteered to MC, collect evaluations, and take care of refreshments. Heather volunteered to help with refreshments.  Inga volunteered to record the workshop.

New Business

Change in state statistics standards to Admin Council.  We are concerned that technical support questions are not being recorded consistently, and that digital materials circulation is not getting recorded.  The state advice on statistics has not been updated to reflect changes in technology.  Sarah, Be, and Heather will draft a letter to give to the Admin Council, with the recommendation that they send it to the State Librarian.

Virtual meeting attendance. We agreed to try Google Hangouts at the next meeting at Monterey Library as a way for committee members to virtually attend the meeting.  Sarah will add this to the agenda.

November meeting: change the date? (Thanksgiving week).  We agreed the date could stay the same.

Change in chair status.  Because Kris Amaral had to step down as co-chair, Sarah is now chair of the reference committee, as opposed to co-chair.  Benjamin volunteered to be vice-chair.

Reference Shares.

Jean asked if any libraries were using a mapping feature in their catalog, showing where in the library the item was located.  MPL did on their old catalog, and CSUMB still does.  Both features were developed in house.

MCO shared they were getting new copiers that would scan to USB.  Be will send out the name of the copier (Dataflow?).  MCO is also using Evanced room reservations for the public to reserve meeting rooms.  MPC uses it too.

Salinas shared a problem they were having with patrons coming in with large bags. They don’t allow them inside, but don’t allow them outside either.  They wanted to know what other libraries were doing.  Other libraries said they were having similar problems, also with bicycles, sleeping bags, and double strollers.  Several said they didn’t allow patrons to block access to anything, and they required patrons to not leave anything unattended.  Having security staff helps as well.

News from libraries (not recorded)

Next meeting: November 25, 2014 at Monterey Public Library
