Reports:

Administrative Council – Sarah reported that the December meeting was cancelled due to the rainstorm.  The next meeting will be in February.

Technology Committee – Deborah reported that the next workshop, a comparison of remote meeting software, will be on April 24th. Participants at CSUMB and at Cabrillo will communicate with each other virtually. Workshop topics will include virtual attendance etiquette and a comparison of software.

Interlibrary Loan Committee – Jean reported that the committee watched a webinar about OCLC statistics. There will be a copyright demonstration at the April 14th meeting. Santa Cruz Public Library has reinstated book interlibrary loans. MCFL and HML charge $3.00 for interlibrary loans. SCPL will charge $5.00 per interlibrary loan. WPL offers free interlibrary loan service.

SPLAMBA – Be reported that SPLAMBA will host a workshop about the social implications of technology on children. The workshop will be held on March 20th from 9:00 a.m. to

Old Business:

Proposed Letter to the California State Library Regarding Capturing Technology Statistics

Be said that it was decided to not write the letter to CSL.

The Spring Workshop

Be, Ann and Heather are on the subcommittee for the spring workshop.  Be said that the workshop could be named Triple Wellness or Wellness 3 .The three components of the workshop will be ergonomics, functional movement and emotional wellness. Be will check on the availability of Castroville or Marina for the workshop location.  Ann will do workshop promotion. Heather will be in charge of refreshments.

Be contacted Yoga Sanctuary in Seaside and Monterey County Peninsula Wellness. County representatives are happy to do a presentation about ergonomics with the restriction that the workshop must be held within Monterey County in a county owned facility. Inga suggested that part of a presentation could include a workstation simulation. Heather suggested adding a demonstration of workstation adjustments for workstations that are shared by more than one employee.  Heather said that the City of Watsonville offers ZUMBA classes. Ann discussed including information about stand up desks. Heather suggested the possibility of including information about workplace organizational skills.

Ann will contact Iron Republic to inquire about a demonstration of exercises to combat fatigue and stress.

Inga suggested that CHOMP may also offer presentations about occupational wellness.

Jean volunteered to inquire at CHOMP to find out if they offer stress management presentations or demonstrations.

[The committee decided, post meeting, that the workshop will be on April 17th at the Marina Branch of MCFL.]

Sarah will confer with Donna Truong or the Administrative Council about the workshop budget availability and current budget request procedures.   Yoga Sanctuary would accept a stipend, $50.00 if available, for travel reimbursement and as a one time group class fee. The county presenters would already be paid as county employees. CHOMP probably does not charge a fee for presentations. $75.00 was suggested for refreshments.

The Services Survey

Georg Romero [CAB] demonstrated the latest changes to the services survey. He said that at the November meeting the new survey was only partially enabled. The options were to create a database or to simplify the survey to allow librarians to easily update their own library information. The survey is searchable by two major categories, which are library and service.  To access these two options in the survey hover over either view by library or view by service or technology. A database would be more technically complicated than are the webpages. He said that WORD documents are flat file pages.

Only services that a library does have are listed on the survey. Half of the MOBAC library entries have been updated. George has a call in to Cruzio to show updates.

Georg said that the display is limited by the search engine options.  He will address

white space between the lines and consider alphabetizing the services.  He will also contact Steve Watkins regarding the survey mechanism.

New Business:

Databases

Inga will forward the PLP and CALIFA e mail regarding the February 6th EBSCO and Gale webinar and in person information session.

[Post meeting Inga forwarded the following information:

We have set up a time for both vendors to come and demo their databases in person, and discuss the offers that they are putting together for PLP members.  These sessions will take place on Friday, February 6 from 10-12am, at the San Jose public library.   EBSCO will be providing a light breakfast before the sessions start, and Gale will be providing lunch for those who want to stay and see some more in-depth demos after the sessions.  The EBSCO session will run from 10-10:55 and Gale from 11-11:55.

For those who are unable to make it in person, we will have a webinar and conference call set up as well so you can join in that way.

Please RSVP using the form below and let us know if you are joining in person or via webinar.

Discovery Services

Deborah reported that having discovery made statistics go way up at HCL. The library staff at HCL are very happy with discovery. They use EBSCO Discovery Service at HCL. There is a search box on the website. This service combines catalogs, most databases and e books. It is index based, as opposed to federated based. Results are quick and accurate.   CSUMB uses Summon Serial Solutions.

Reference Shares:

Heather discussed how WPL has worked with staff on techniques to distinguish reference from non reference questions for statistics. Jean said that she liked the California State Library statistics webinar.  Anyone can view the webinar.  A login, which may have to be obtained from the library director, is required to view the full California State Library Public Library Statistics website. The statistics webinar shows how to use EXCEL to sort and to convert statistics into graphics, such as a bar chart. CSL webinar notices are on CALIX.

Jean reported that FirstSearch will be defunct as of December 2015.  The staff version of WorldCat Discovery, which includes a Staff ILL request button, will take the place of WorldCat and FirstSearch.  HML can put GALE but not EBSCO in Discovery.  Jean mentioned that it is slow and has no call numbers that are readily apparent.

News From the Libraries:  Not recorded

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 24th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hartnell College Library Community Room, which is room A 105.

The meeting was adjourned.
