March 24, 2015

Recorder: Glenn Tozier

The meeting was called to order by Sarah at 2:10 p.m.

Proxies:  Jean for Betty Mason [SBE]; and Be for Ann Jacobson [NPS] and Heather Geddes [WPL]

Agenda:  No changes

Approval of Minutes:  Approved with the following corrections: Name corrected for the Spring Workshop’s presenter from the Yoga Center. Space added between the words ‘virtual’ and ‘meeting’ under the Technology Committee report.

Public Comments: None

Reports:

Administrative Council – No meeting.

Technology Committee – No meeting.

Interlibrary Loan Committee – No meeting.

SPLAMBA – Be reported that last month’s workshop at Watsonville Public Library was a success with roughly 40 attendees, including a large group of students from Hartnell’s Early Child Education (ECE) program. The one regret was that they did not do an evaluation at the end of the program, but it was suggested that perhaps the ECE students might be willing to do one. Deborah offered to send an evaluation form to the ECE faculty who was in attendance if Be could provide one.

Old Business:

Spring Workshop

Be reported that the flyers for the April 17th event are out and the schedule has (nearly) been finalized. Both Be and Jean reported that library staff at their respective libraries have expressed interest in the event. Be reported that unfortunately she is still waiting on confirmation from Monterey County Health Department, but is confident that even if they are unable to send a presenter that there is enough content even without that presentation.

There was a brief discussion about the complications that videotaping of the event present, specifically the confusion of a microphone being involved that is not involved in amplification, but only captures sound for the video. There were some comments related to this in the fall program’s evaluation. It was decided that there would more prominent reminders as to the function of the microphone, and that rather than run it back and forth during Q&As that the person answering audience questions would simply repeat the question.

Sarah will bring consent forms, and Be will bring a sign announcing that the workshop will be videotaped.

New Business:

Host/Location for next meeting?

Because PGPL’s Little House has not been confirmed for the April meeting, the group decided to look into other options. Glenn offered to look into using MPC, and will confirm via email.

Reference Shares:

Inga asked the other public library representatives if they are using A-Z or Reference USA. Jean reported back that they have both, Be reported that Reference USA is a favorite at MCFL and that many librarians there would be loath to see it go.

Jean asked if any other libraries were using WorldCat Discovery, and if anyone had also found it hard to get Dewey numbers from that interface.

Glenn reported that he had been able to find original documents for students seeking help at the reference desk at both the Hathi Trust (http://www.hathitrust.org/) and the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/).

News from Libraries:  Not recorded

Future Agenda items: April: Meeting locations for next year, workshop evaluation.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 28th, at 2:00 pm at the MPC Library (confirmed 03.25.2015).

The meeting was adjourned.
